You've probably already had doubts about using these two words. What's the difference between bon and bien? And how do you know when to use them? I'll explain in just a few minutes!

The adjective "bon"
“Bon” is an adjective. It can be translated as “good” in English.
Like all adjectives, it gives information about a noun.
Examples: Le gâteau est bon. Il a un bon niveau de français. - The cake is good. He has a good level of French.
“Bon” can be given in the feminine and/or plural:
Feminine singular: Bonne
Example: La cuisine française est bonne. - French cuisine is good.
Masculine plural: Bons
Example: Mes enfants sont bons en mathématiques. - My children are good at mathematics.
Feminine plural: Good
Example: Je prends des bonnes résolutions le 1er janvier. - I make good resolutions on January 1st.
🗣️ “Bon” and “bons” are pronounced the same.
“Bonne” and ‘bonnes’ are pronounced the same.
The opposite of “bon” is: “mauvais”.
Example: Le gâteau est mauvais. Il a un mauvais niveau de français. - The cake is bad. He has a bad level of French.
The adverb "bien"
“Bien” is an adverb. It can be translated as “well”. It gives information about a verb.
Examples: Elle danse bien. Ils parlent bien français. - She dances well. They speak French well.
Like all adverbs, “bien” is invariable. There is no agreement in the feminine or plural.
You can't use “bon” with a verb.
❌ Don't say: Tu parles bon.
The opposite of “bien” is: “mal”.
Examples: Elle danse mal. Ils parlent mal français. - She dances badly. They speak French badly.
Exception
With the verb "sentir" (to smell), we use "bon" (and not "bien").
✅ Say : Ça sent bon. (It smells good.)
❌ Don't say : Ça sent bien.
Contrary : Ça sent mauvais. (It smells bad.)
⚠️ With the verb "se sentir" (to feel), we use "bien".
Ex : Je me sens bien. (I feel good.)
Idioms with "bon"
Bon courage. - Good luck to encourage someone in a difficult situation.
Bonne chance. - Good luck.
Bon appétit. - To wish someone a good meal.
Bon voyage. - To say goodbye to someone going on a trip.
En bon état - In good conditon
Bon anniversaire. - Happy birthday
Avoir un bon coup de fourchette. - To have a good appetite, to eat a lot
À la bonne franquette - Without fuss, simply, without ceremony (Un dîner à la bonne franquette)
Avoir bonne mine. - To look good
Être de bonne humeur. To be in a good mood
Les bonnes manières - Good manners
De bonne heure - Early (Mon fils se couche de bonne heure. - My son goes to bed early.)
C'est bon ! = That's enough!
Idioms with "bien"
Ça va bien. - I'm fine.
Je vais bien. - I'm fine.
Être bien dans sa peau. - To feel good about one's body, to be comfortable with one's appearance.
J'aime bien. - I like (J'aime bien le sport. - I like sport.)
On verra bien. - We'll see.
Bel et bien - Really
Être bien vu par quelqu'un - To be well regarded to someone. (Elle est bien vue par le patron. - She's well regarded by the boss.)
Ça te va bien. - It suits you.
Difference between bon and bien
